Copy Editor Job Description

Copy editors are responsible for editing copy for correct spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax. The copy editor also revises copy to improve flow and structure, where necessary, and to check for continuity and consistency. This role requires an eye for detail, expert knowledge of grammar and style, and the ability to deliver quality work under deadline. Knowledge of traditional proofreaders’ marks and the editing functions of Acrobat, Word or other software is often required. Industry knowledge and an understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) may be preferred. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or English is often preferred.

Typical copy editor duties:

Polishing and rewriting copy as necessary to clarify meaning, conform to style guidelines and editorial policies, or improve overall readabilityVerifying facts, including dates, statistics and source citationsWriting headlines and captions
