Proofreader Job Description

Proofreaders review copy that has been copy edited and laid out to ensure proper grammar, spelling, style and formatting. As the final set of eyes on content before it is published, proofreaders are responsible for making sure a document is free of any errors that might have slipped past the editor. This position requires an eye for detail and thorough knowledge of grammatical and stylistic concepts. Proficiency in traditional proofreaders’ marks, as well as the editing functions of Acrobat, Word or other software, is often required. Employers usually look for candidates who have at least two years of relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in English or journalism may be preferred.

Cross-checking references and verifying statistics and other data in documentsEnsuring copy aligns with the desired tone, formatting and messagingCollaborating with editors and writers to resolve questions and problems and improve processes
